Porcelain veneers are made from thin coverings of porcelain which become strong, natural looking and long-lasting when they are bonded to teeth. If you have gaps, chipped or cracked teeth or discolouration, veneers could dramatically improve your smile.
The dentist will discuss with you those teeth that need to be veneered to obtain the desired result.
It is usual to have as many as six upper front teeth treated. Whilst it could be more, it may just be one or two discoloured or misshapen teeth. It's generally the smile line that needs improving, so you would only need to veneer those teeth that show. In some cases the lower teeth may need veneering too.
The dentist will remove a thin layer from the surface of the teeth to be treated, usually about 1mm.
An impression is taken and a temporary veneer fitted. The veneers are hand made by a dental technician to match the shape, colour and contour of your natural teeth. At the second visit, about a week to ten days later, the dentist will bond the finished veneers. Once bonded they become strong and natural looking. You will be able to eat with them immediately after the treatment.
Porcelain does not stain and the enamel bond is very strong. In most cases you should expect a veneer to last 5 years or more and they have been known to last longer than 8 years. Generally the tooth underneath discolours with time and this is the most common reason to replace them. In a small number of cases a veneer may de-bond or chip. In this situation the dentist will be able to make you a replacement.
Important factors for the longevity of veneers are the effectiveness of your oral hygiene regime at home and regular dental checkups at your general dentist. If you have veneers fitted you should also avoid biting fingernails, pins, ice and other hard objects. The dentist may also recommend a bite guard.
Often people will have 4 to 6 veneers on their upper front teeth In complex cases he dentist may recommend that before treatment starts, a model is made of your teeth with the veneers shown in white. wax. This is called diagnostic wax up, it gives you the chance to see how veneers will look before treatment starts and it provides the dentist with the opportunity to calculate the best shape and tooth preparation needed. There is usually an additional cost for diagnostic wax ups. Your dentist will give you a written estimate and treatment plan before the treatment starts.
